What is the role of a Registered Accessibility Specialist?

A Registered Accessibility Specialist (RAS) plays a crucial role in ensuring that buildings and facilities are accessible to all individuals, including those with disabilities. This article delves into the role and responsibilities of Registered Accessibility Specialists.

Key Responsibilities:

Registered Accessibility Specialists (RAS) are licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and are responsible for ensuring that public spaces and built environments are compliant with the Texas Architectural Barriers Act (TABA) and the Texas Accessibility Standards (TAS).

1. Plan Reviews:

One of the primary tasks of Registered Accessibility Specialists is to review architectural plans for new constructions or renovations. They ensure that the designs adhere to the required accessibility standards, which include details like wheelchair ramp gradients, door width, elevator access, and restroom design.

2. Site Inspections:

Registered Accessibility Specialists perform on-site inspections to ensure that the built environment conforms to the plans and meets all accessibility standards. This process involves a detailed examination of physical spaces and features like parking, pathways, entrances, and internal navigation.

3. Consulting Services:

It is common for Registered Accessibility Specialists to serve as consultants; advising architects, builders, and property owners on how to incorporate accessibility features into their designs. This role is critical in the early stages of planning and can significantly influence the overall accessibility of a building.

4. Training and Awareness:

Education is a significant part of a RAS’s role. They often conduct training sessions for architects, builders, and property managers about accessibility laws and best practices. Increasing awareness and understanding of accessibility needs is crucial for creating an inclusive environment.

The Importance of a Registered Accessibility Specialist:

Registered Accessibility Specialists are at the forefront of creating a more inclusive society, ensuring that accessibility is not an afterthought but a fundamental aspect of design and construction. By doing so, RAS professionals contribute significantly to building a world that acknowledges and accommodates the needs of all its citizens, regardless of their physical abilities.
